DESCRIPTION/TERRAIN: The University of West Florida’s main campus in Pensacola consists of 1,600 acres of rolling hills and natural woodland along the Escambia River ten miles north of downtown Pensacola. The campus has been designed to complement the natural beauty of this nature preserve. Approximately 10 miles of nature trails are shared by bicyclists, horseback riders, hikers, and the occasional dog-walker. Only UWF pass-issued riders may ride on the property or guests of pass-holders. A limited amount of passes are issued each December and there is usually a waiting list. Contact Darla Felt for information on getting on the list. The trails are mostly narrow and windy single-track that make several dips through ravines and climbs up and down gulleys. A short but steep climb will take you to a high point overlooking Escambia River and the Crist Power Plant. Power line easements give riders a chance to canter and a few near-by streams allow access to watering spots. There are many fallen trees that cross above the trails, so bring a short horse or prepare to mount and dismount several times through-out your ride. Wearing a helmet and sleeved shirt is highly recommended because of the narrow trails and thick woods.
